Isaanhaus/Isaanhouse

The region of Isaan I traveled, houses are the same type:

The house is carried by a skeleton of concrete columns. The upper floor is made of thin wood. Usually it is a big room, separated by cupboards or thin wooden walls in different compartments, serving as sleeping places. I sleep in such a compartment. Very luxury, because of air-condition!

Die Stiegen sind sehr steil und kurz.
The steps are very short and steep.

The ground floor can be free space or partly closed by some other rooms: kind of living room:

Very often there is a kitchen with the sink, big fridge, place for pots. All households I have seen have a microwave and a steam cooker for rice. Most food is stored in the fridge because of the danger of insects and animals. All has to be sealed very carefully.

The cookery happens in an outdoor-kitchen room:
The walls don´t reach up to the ceiling, there is always fresh air. Makes sense during the hot season, but now in winter it is bad, because the opposite side are the bathrooms with open walls either and all doors are left open!

Man muss also richtig hinaufsteigen. Nicht ungefährlich, weil ja alles nass ist.
There are two bathrooms:One „Farang-style“ with a warm shower and a western style toilet. And a „Thai-style“ with only cold water which is stored in the big pot and the other kind of toilet. My family prefers the cold water, they say is better for the skin.
The step to the Thai-toilet is mall in this house, more often much higher. Often the second step is higher then shown in the picture, slippery because of being wet. Really dangerous.

People have to step up, and since most toilets are Thai-style, the following is clear:

There is a laundry room too: The washing machine only uses cold water, all clothes are changed every day, Underwear to be dried in the laundry room.
Outside the house there is a shadowy place for rest:

As I learned in the meantime: The village has around 700 inhabitants. The described house is one of the four biggest. There are relatives who live in Bangkok and Japan and who give support.

Thank you very much for continuing to share your experiences. You really are outside of your normal comfort zone – that’s great.

Very interesting discription of the house. It’s quite similar to indian houses, but much more “rich”. In Thailand you have tiles, in India you have only clay or pressed earth on the floor and walls in rural areas.
I also know the 2 different styles of toilets and find the graphic as funny as in India too.
Anothere similarity seems also that I cannot see any toilet paper but water buckets. So I presume that one also have to use hand and water like in many asian countries. I’ve got very quick used to that methode and found it much more hygienic than our western style with paper. I kept on using western and after hanging to asian style additionally.
Therefore Indians only eat with the right hand itself – no cuttlery -, which you will notice while in India
For “poor” circumstances my opinion is, that the houses are really huge… and kind of luxurious. Wonderful idea a show-place outside.

    Hugs + kiss

Looking forward to communicate over Skype with you again when you’re in India!!!

P.S. I’m only wondering about the real thin columns, the house stands on. They look like matches, and that they could break together every minute…

Yes, this house is rather big, not all are that huge. My housemate has relatives in Japan and in Bangkok. So certainly above average. But this is the house I know best, and they allowed me to publish.
Some houses even have solid walls, but they are a minority.
